Thursday evening February 26th my companion, photographer and friend, Cynthia Villa and I headed over to check out Aura. Aura’s convenient location on McKinney Ave. is walking distance for those of us who live in the heart of “uptown”. Up town is a historical neighborhood here in Dallas, Texas that has been redeveloped since the horse and buggy days. To capture the historical feel of the neighborhood, there is still a trolley running up and down McKinney Ave. That can be a lot of fun and (safer obviously) than driving, for those who want to hit a few of the hot spots along McKinney. We chose Aura for a special event going on, a party being hosted by “The Hills” television producers. As we approached the front door, the first impression started out great, being met by congenial, sharp dressed doormen, Lance Vester and Sam Sojdei. It’s always such a relief when a doorman recognizes a lady when they see one. (So many of them don’t.) Ah, yes good door people are so very critical to the success of a night club.

First class atmosphere
As soon as we walked in we felt the positive vibes in the room as D.J. Rev was spinning something very “up”. I don’t know what he was playing, but it was very upbeat, refreshingly unfamiliar and thankfully I didn’t hear a single Michael Jackson tune the entire duration of our time at Aura. As positive and uplifting as the music was, it was a little too loud to actually converse with anyone. I saw an old friend, and we really couldn’t catch up because the music was simply too loud. It would be really cool if there was some little nook and/or cranny available to escape the overwhelming music, if/when you actually want to talk to someone. Perhaps the use of solid glass partitions could be used to divide the main floor apart from the bar, or to have some of the booths slightly isolated for the purpose of being able to talk and hang out. Yeah, I am seeing some really cool etched glass partitions in Aura, in the near future….

Mixing Table with Special Effects!
Another really nice thing going on at Aura was there was plenty of fresh air circulating and when we left there was not a trace of cigarette smoke in our hair or clothes!!! That really is a miracle for a nightclub. Bravo, Avi, whatever ventilation system you are using for Aura, its working! This may not be something people think about when they go out, however they think about it after experiencing a club. There is a place in Dallas many people I know do not like to go to, because the smoke is too thick and they come out of that place reeking. It’s really not cool to have all that pollution all over the place. So, it really is refreshing to be able to breathe easily and thank God you’ll be able to breathe if you find yourself and your buddies on the dance floor of Aura!

The DJ Rocks all Night Long!
The owners of Aura are a darling young couple, Avi and Veronic Adri. They are a beautiful warm and energetic couple who just recently tied the knot this past summer. Avi used to be a hairstylist. Together they run the club with help from their #1 Doorman Franc Hafner. Franc with a very discerning eye! Speaking of the whole yin and yang balance there was also a nice ratio of that in the club that night. Got to keep that yin and yang balance, right?? Viva la difference!!!

One of these people is our writrer Nina...can you guess which one?
The “aura” of exclusivity instantly reveals that you’re at the one of the most happening clubs around. If you’re looking for Dallas's classiest late-night lounge, you have found it at Aura. The doors swing open at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, and Thursday through Saturday, Aura welcomes a well-heeled after-dinner crowd interested in getting together with old friends or making new ones, in a setting of cool sophistication. Premium spirits and bottle service keep the energy level high, while smooth sounds provide the perfect backdrop for meeting, greeting and even making promising romantic connections. VIP areas and party packages are available of course.

What does she think of Aura?
We really liked the energy at Aura, and the music was good and everything but for those who don’t have a table there was nowhere to sit down. Poor unescorted ladies; they need somewhere to park their perky dire ears!!! I know my tootsies were feeling the pinch after an hour or so in 5” heels and on concrete floors. I’m seeing some Lucite stools maybe, to go with those glass partitions….A place to perch and a place to converse, or the ability to converse somewhere in the club. Those are the only two things lacking that I think could really give a nice little neighborhood nightclub like Aura a little lift up too purrrrfection.

Good Times at Aura...we will be back!

Starbucks signs on with "Morning Joe"
Starbucks has become the naming sponsor of MSNBC's "Morning Joe," marking the closest tie between an advertiser and a national news show in years. Host Joe Scarborough has been drinking Starbucks coffee on air for years, but now the show incorporates Starbucks graphics and likely will team with the coffee company on charitable initiatives.

American brewers imitate Belgian brewers
Homages to Belgium's sour beers are popping up as the next big thing in craft brewing. Breweries including New Belgium, Jolly Pumpkin, Lost Abbey and Flossmoor Station are making the unpredictable brews. "In the beer-geek population, sour beers are the Holy Grail," New Belgium's sensory specialist said. "They're difficult to produce. They're impossible to control. But in the end, you end up falling in love with them." Chicago Tribune (4/15)
A cool spin on frozen drinks
As the weather gets warm, cool down diners with frozen drinks but try to think outside of the box. Try putting a twist on a classic drink, such as adapting a mojito to be a frozen beverage. Consider offering frozen drinks as dessert or blending in superfoods such as acai for a healthy frozen-drink offering. Restaurants & Institutions (5/7)
Improving wine with air
Most wine should be decanted, experts say, but there's no need for fancy equipment. Even a jelly jar will do. Said the wine director at Providence restaurant: "If a wine can't stand up to decanting, it can't stand up to drinking. ... Once you decant the wines, they become much more aromatic and expressive."
